A Message from Our Chair

Dr. Shauna Bruno
Chair of the Board
As I reflect on the past year, it is evident that everyone at Peace Hills Insurance has been on a transformative journey—one guided in deep reflection, commitment, and a shared vision for our future. Throughout the year, we have taken meaningful steps in setting the stage to lay a strong foundation for what lies ahead, ensuring every decision aligns with our purpose.
One of the most significant undertakings by the Board of Directors was refreshing the company’s Vision, Mission, and Values. This was more than a rewording exercise; it was a deliberate and thoughtful process, fueled by a deep sense of responsibility and meaningful discussions in which we asked ourselves: What is our why? How do we bring together diverse aspirations into a unified vision? Central to this has been the teaching of Wahkôtowin, which means Kinship/Family – a Cree teaching that guides our relationship with each other and all of creation, emphasizing our duty to act with respect and care. Embracing these teachings not only acknowledges our existing strengths but also provides guidance for the future. The reimagining of all 3 statements is not just a reflection of who we are today but a guiding light for where we aspire to go.
In addition to this foundational work, I want to take a moment to celebrate a remarkable achievement: our AM Best rating upgrade. This recognition is a testament to the unwavering dedication of the entire Peace Hills team. It reflects the collective effort to continuously improve, uphold our values, and remain a trusted partner to our brokers and insureds.
This past year has also brought significant challenges, including the Jasper wildfire and Calgary hailstorm, all while building a new system. Such moments test our resilience, but they also highlight the strength of our team and our deep-rooted commitment to the communities we serve. The ability to react swiftly and effectively reflects our values—responsiveness, dedication, and compassion—and demonstrates the Board’s confidence in all the people behind Peace Hills. Wahkôtowin teaches us that we are all connected, and in times of crisis, this philosophy is evident in how we support one another.
When I consider our 42-year story, I see a company built on trust, credibility, and untiring perseverance. This is evident not only in our relationships with brokers, customers, and communities but also in the Board’s trust in our staff. In the face of new systems, catastrophic events, and evolving outside challenges, the team has demonstrated true resilience. I am incredibly proud of how our company has navigated these moments and emerged stronger. I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the changes within our Board. This year, we bid farewell to three dedicated directors, Shannon Buffalo, Bill Kordyback, and Marvin Yellowbird, whose leadership, insights, and commitment to Peace Hills Insurance over the years have been invaluable. In their place, we are excited to welcome three new members: Kurt Buffalo, Zoe Harrison, and Louise Omeasoo. Each brings extensive experience and knowledge, and we look forward to learning from and working alongside them.
As I write this on behalf of the entire Board, I want the readers of this report to know that every decision, every step we have taken has been intentional and purposeful. We move forward with a shared vision, strengthened by our connections and commitment to one another. Together, we are setting the stage for a future that is not only strong but deeply rooted in the values that define us—all in the spirit of Wahkôtowin.
